Cookies

A cookie is a text-only string of information that a website transfers to your computer's hard disk so that the website can remember who you are and provide certain types of functionality, such as a Shopping Basket. Most major websites use cookies however cookies alone cannot be used to identify you.

A cookie will typically contain the name of the domain from which the cookie has come; the "lifetime" of the cookie; and a value, usually a randomly generated unique number.

Two types of cookies are used by Raleigh UK's websites to provide user account and shopping basket functionality:

  • Session Cookies, which are temporary cookies that remain in the cookie file of your browser until you leave the website
  • Persistent Cookies, which remain in the cookie file of your browser for much longer (though how long will depend on the lifetime of the specific cookie)

On all of our websites, we use Google Analytics to measure how the websites are performing. Essentially, this gives us information about what's popular, how people move through the website, how long they spend browsing and what they do while they're are.

For this to work, the Analytics system writes a cookie onto your device which simply identifies that you're looking at the website. It doesn't tell us who you are, or any personal information. Location is logged, but only at the level of a particular town, not more detailed than that.

Analytics also tells us what browsers are being used to look at the website, and the screen resolutions being used. This information is important so that we can plan future developments and improvements to our websites.

Another function that makes use of a cookie is remembering your account username when you've clicked the 'remember on this machine' checkbox when logging into our online shop.

The Help menu on the menu bar of most browsers will tell you how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie and how to disable cookies altogether. However, because cookies allow you to take advantage of some of our websites essential features, we recommend that you leave them turned on. You can find more information on how to disable or enable cookies by visiting www.allaboutcookies.org.

If you do leave cookies turned on, be sure to log out of our websites (if applicable) when you finish using a shared computer.

Data Security

We work to protect the security of your personal information during transmission by using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) software, which encrypts information you input.

It is important for you to protect against unauthorised access to your login credentials and to your computer. Be sure to log out when you finish using a shared computer.
